Living Room Tips

Furniture
  • Is furniture arranged for safe passage and easy mobility?

  • Can your loved one get into and out of furniture easily? Furniture that is low and/or overstuffed makes this very difficult and is the cause of many falls.

  • Chairs with armrests make it easier to get out of so they have something to push themselves up with.

  • Lift chairs are chairs that have a motor and can be raised and lowered at the touch of a button. They are available at home medical equipment stores.

  • The floor
  • Make sure the floor is clear of clutter, electrical/phone cords and pathways are open with plenty of room for passage.

  • Low pile carpet is easier to manuever a walker or wheelchair on.

  • If there are rugs in the room, consider removing them, or make sure they are not a danger of tripping on.

  • Miscellaneous
  • Make sure there is adequate lighting and the light switch is accessible

  • The more congested a room is, the more likely a fall could occur

  • Is your loved one able to manage the TV/Radio?

  • Does your loved one have access to a phone in this room?
