“ HOW TO SURVIVE THE SANDWICH GENERATION ”
Post Date: 09/27/2007

WHAT: Free Evening Workshop for Children of Aging Parents

WHEN: TBD (Call 605-339-4847 to RSVP)

WHERE: Trail Ridge near 69th and Louise Ave.
According to an AARP survey and the US Census Bureau, approximately 73,000 people in South Dakota are caring for an aging parent or relative. Over 22,000 of these caregivers are being sandwiched between the responsibilities of caring for their children and their aging parents. This is an astounding 2.8% of the population in South Dakota.
“I never planned on taking care of my parents. I didn’t set aside money or time in case I needed to help them sometime in the future…and then surprise! They needed my help, and I didn’t know where to start.” According to author, Virginia Morris, this is a typical scenario for the Sandwich Generation. Morris states, “No matter where you are in the process, whether you’re just starting out or already deeply enmeshed, the most important thing you can do for your aging parent and yourself is this: Be prepared for what might come.”

In an effort to help Sandwich Generation caregivers become better prepared, the Alliance for Caregiver Education (ACE) hosts FREE workshops. ACE’s senior services specialists offer participants:

• Tips on how to assess your parents needs
• Advice for talking about sensitive subjects
• Information on financial and legal issues
• How to find available local resources
• And how to take care of YOU, the caregiver

Participants will need to pre-register for the next seminar by calling 605-339-4847.
